Fae was shaken into reality as her horse stopped short. She was surprised to see Sel outside the castle. He walked closer and asked, “Are you alive?”

“I don’t suppose that I would answer you if I wasn’t.”

Sel smiled. “I will help you down if you can swing your legs off.”

She shifted her lower body, groaning in pain as she collided with the ground. Sel caught her, but her weight was too much for his weakened arms, and it was all he could do to hold her upright. Fae braced herself, taking the pressure off his arms as she leaned against him.

Aberdine began to sob. “My brother will die because you live.”

Fae stared at her. “What?”

“I was given two different images of this day. In one, you died bravely in battle, your body broken, yet you continued to fight. The men followed your courageous lead, and the battle was won through sheer bravery. The other image was of my brother, healing those injured in battle. I did not see you, but when the Rumon reached the top, the men knew the battle had been lost. Some stayed to fight, but most retreated, they had no leader to follow or inspire them. Alar was killed. Fae would have stayed. You didn’t.”

“Alar put me on the horse and knocked me out.”

“Fae has been in many battles. Alar never went to her, even when she was badly injured. You have condemned our world because of your lack of character. I have hated Fae for as long as I can remember, but she was always a woman who inspired those around her. I don’t know who you are, but you’re not Fae.”

The words were a verbal blade through the heart, yet it was the truth. Mary had never inspired anyone, and now she was a failure in her dream world. She pushed away from Sel, and without a word, began to walk into the landscape. She deserved to die, alone and with dishonor. Her destination was clear, and as she walked, the only other reality was the tears dripping down her bloodstained face.
